Game Update: NihongoUp 1.2.5

It’s been a long time since the last NihongoUp update and the reason for that is that I was busy working on several big new features that required major changes in the game code as well as on some secret NihongoUp related projects that you’ll soon start hearing about! 1.2.5 is one of the biggest updates in the history of this little game. Here’s the changelog:

  • Many major bug fixes
  • Yōon kana (ex.: キャ) are now present in the Hiragana and Katakana modes
  • A mode combining hiragana and katakana characters was added
  • A new Vocabulary mode (JLPT 4, JLPT 3 and JLPT 2) was added
  • A new Counters mode was added

Most of the additions were inspired by the helpful suggestions made at the NihongoUp feedback page so if you have an idea that still wasn’t implemented, or if you happen to find a bug, please post it there and I’ll try to respond to your comments as soon as possible!

UPDATE: Version 1.2.5 introduced a bug where it was impossible to access the hiragana mode of the game. Please download version 1.2.6 to fix this problem.

To count in Japanese you have to use "counters" based on what type of object you are counting. For example, "1 cat" is 一匹の猫 (いっぴき の ねこ), whereas "1 book" is 一冊の本 (いっさつ の ほん). IMHO if there is one thing that is difficult in Japanese then this is it (yes, I truly believe that counters are at least on par with kanji and/or particles).
